ประวัติโรงเรียน
เนื่องในวโรกาสแห่งศุภมงคลวาระที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯเสด็จเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติครบ 50 ปี ในวันที่ 9 มิถุนายน 2539 กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ โดยกรมสามัญศึกษา กระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้ระลึกถึงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระองค์ท่านที่มีต่อพสกนิกรชาวไทย อย่างล้นพ้น และทรงเล็งเห็นความสำคัญของการศึกษาในการที่จะพัฒนาบุคคล และประเทศชาติให้เจริญอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพได้ จากพระราชกรณียกิจของพระองค์สะท้อนให้เห็นแนวพระราชดำริ ที่ทรงมุ่งมั่น พระราชหฤทัยที่จะส่งเสริม ทำนุบำรุงการศึกษา ให้แก่นักเรียนและเยาวชนของชาติ ซึ่งเป็นพสกนิกร ของพระองค์ที่เจริญเติบโตให้เป็นพลเมืองของประเทศชาติที่ดีในภายภาคหน้า ประกอบกับ รัฐบาลสมัยนั้น มีการเร่งรัดการขยายโอกาสทางการศึกษา เพื่อให้เด็กและเยาวชนได้รับการศึกษาในระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา อย่างทั่วถึงในส่วนกลางและส่วนภูมิภาค โดยเฉพาะมีนโยบายที่จะกระจายความเจริญสู่ภูมิภาคให้มากขึ้น
ด้วยสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระองค์ กรมสามัญศึกษาได้เล็งเห็นว่าโรงเรียน ภปร.
ราชวิทยาลัย ซึ่งเป็นโรงเรียนในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ
รับนักเรียนประจำชายได้โอนมาอยู่ในความดูแลของกรมสามัญศึกษา กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2517 โดยคณะกรรมการราชวิทยาลัยมูลนิธิเพื่อการศึกษา ได้เรียนรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ในสมัยนั้น คือ นายอภัย จันทวิมล ขอให้พิจารณาและได้รับความเห็นชอบในหลักการ
ที่จะให้โรงเรียน ภปร.ราชวิทยาลัย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์เป็นโรงเรียนตัวอย่างของโรงเรียนประจำ ที่อาจจะตั้งเพิ่มขึ้นในกาลต่อไป
และจากการดำเนินงานปรากฏว่านักเรียนของโรงเรียน ภปร.ราชวิทยาลัย เป็นนักเรียน
ที่มีระเบียบวินัย มีจรรยามารยาทเรียบร้อย มีความเป็นผู้นำ เป็นสุภาพบุรุษ มีร่างกายแข็งแรง
มีความรู้ความสามารถเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีได้ เนื่องในโอกาสอันเป็นมหามงคลนี้ กรมสามัญศึกษา
จึงเห็นสมควรจัดทำโครงการจัดตั้งโรงเรียนลักษณะโรงเรียน ภปร.ราชวิทยาลัย ขึ้นในเขตการศึกษาต่าง ๆ เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ เนื่องในวโรกาสที่เสด็จเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติครบ 50 ปี
จากโครงการของกรมสามัญศึกษาดังกล่าว จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในเขตการศึกษา 5 ได้รับการพิจารณาจากกรมสามัญศึกษาให้จัดตั้งโรงเรียน ภปร.ราชวิทยาลัย เฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ เนื่องในมหามงคลวโรกาส ที่พระบาทสมเด็จ
พระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ ทรงครองราชย์ครบ 50 ปี ได้พระราชทานนามโดยใช้ชื่อโรงเรียนครั้งแรกว่า “โรงเรียนเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ ทรงครองราชย์ครบ 50 ปี จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ตำบลไผ่ขวาง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี”
ต่อมาภายหลังได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณอันสูงยิ่งจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ
พระราชทานนามโรงเรียนใหม่ว่า “โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย สุพรรณบุรี” เป็นโรงเรียนที่กระทรวง
ศึกษาธิการประกาศจัดตั้งขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ 27 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ.2538 พร้อมกันกับโรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย
ในจังหวัดอื่น ๆ อีก 8 โรงเรียน คือ โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย นครปฐม
โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย อุทัยธานี โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย เพชรบูรณ์
โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย กาฬสินธุ์ โรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย ชัยภูมิ
และโรงเรียนกาญจนาภิเษกวิทยาลัย ฉะเชิงเทรา
สำหรับจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ได้พิจารณาที่ดินสาธารณประโยชน์อยู่บริเวณหนองปลาดุก
หมู่ที่ 1 ตำบลไผ่ขวาง อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี มีเนื้อที่ จำนวน 94 ไร่ 3 งาน
